performance - MongoDB geoHaystack Indexes Use Case -

mongodb has a geo index called geohaystack site says optimized "small" areas (http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/core/geohaystack/). quite vague description , unsure if fits use case. considered small? need search points within 1km , 2km. there @ 100 points inside of these searches, considered small? writes , reads approximately 25:75. type of index best use case or area big , should go regular 2d index?
